Oittm Charging Dock for Apple AirPods REVIEW
Like almost all of Apple’s products today once they hit the market people start creating third party accessories to use with them. The AirPods are no different. I’ve seen rubber ear gels, rubber cases, belt attachments, and now charging docks. Oittm has designed a very slick looking charging dock for the Apple AirPods and as a bonus, it looks nice sitting on your desk, too. It’s USB powered and the AirPods case simply slides inside the top of the dock to begin charging them. The dock outputs a 5V/2.4A charge, which helps them charge quickly.
One of the few criticisms I have of the Oittm AirPod Charging Dock is that the packaging is a bit less than desirable. It’s a very simple box and once you open it you will find the dock surrounded by a cardboard cutout box to prevent it from moving. Under that, is the instructions which even though they are rather simple, I’m glad they were included. The first step is to unwrap the USB cable from the bread tie and plug it in. You can use either a power adapter for the wall or plug it directly into your computer. A green light will appear on the front of the dock below the Oittm name. I personally think they should have put the branding on the back of the dock to keep the front looking clean but to each their own.
Once you have the dock powered, place your AirPods in their case into the TPU Protective scratch-free silicone layer and push down. The green light will turn to red if the AirPod case needs to be charged. You can charge the case and the AirPods together or just the case. Once your AirPods are fully charged the red indicator light will switch back to green and you can remove your AirPods from the charging dock.
I’ve been very impressed with this dock and just loved how it was designed and pulled together. The dock is made from rubber, silicone, and aluminum alloy. You have a rubber bottom to keep it from moving around on your desk and to prevent scratching of the surface it’s on. There is an aluminum alloy base that helps provide the weight and it’s covered with an ABS white body that the brand name Oittm is stamped on along with the indicator LED. The inside of the dock is lined with a soft silicone layer that keeps your AirPods from being scratched.
Testing the AirPod Charging Dock was pretty simple. I just put my AirPod case inside the dock and they started charging. I really like that the case fits into the dock so well. It’s a little bit of a tight fit, but to me, that’s good because it keeps them secure. Pulling them out is no problem even though they fit into the dock snuggly.
All in all, this is a very slickly designed accessory for the Apple AirPods, but I would have liked to see a detachable USB cable rather than one integrated into the body. I always feel that a removable cable on docks are better because when a cable becomes frayed or broken it’s simple to replace. Detachable cables also allow you to shorten or lengthen the cable depending on your need. I believe that is my only real complaint about the product and really think this will become a staple on my desk for my AirPods.
